Into The Wild Audio Book by Jon Krakauer

INTO THE WILD developed out of an article Jon Krakauer wrote for Outside magazine. Emory University honors graduate Christopher Johnson McCandless--"Alexander Supertramp"--took off after college in rebellion against authority and his privileged upbringing. Krakauer reveals the details leading up to the boy's death in the Alaskan wilderness, where he was found by hunters in September of 1992, at the age of 24. The author shares personal reflections about his own risk-taking adventures, as well as impressions of those who knew Christopher. In 2007, the book was made into a film directed by Sean Penn.

Memoirs of a Geisha Audio Book by Arthur Golden

"I wasn't born and raised to be a Kyoto geisha....I'm a fisherman's daughter from a little town called Yoroido on the Sea of Japan." How nine-year-old Chiyo, sold with her sister into slavery by their father after their mother's death, becomes Sayuri, the beautiful geisha accomplished in the art of entertaining men, is the focus of this fascinating first novel. Narrating her life story from her elegant suite in the Waldorf Astoria, Sayuri tells of her traumatic arrival at the Nitta okiya (a geisha house), where she endures harsh treatment from Granny and Mother, the greedy owners, and from Hatsumomo, the sadistically cruel head geisha. But Sayuri's chance meeting with the Chairman, who shows her kindness, makes her determined to become a geisha. Under the tutelage of the renowned Mameha, she becomes a leading geisha of the 1930s and 1940s. After the book's compelling first half, the second half is a bit flat and overlong. Still, Golden, with degrees in Japanese art and history, has brilliantly revealed the culture and traditions of an exotic world, closed to most Westerners. Highly recommended.

Breaking Dawn Audio Book by Stephenie Meyer

BREAKING DAWN, the hotly anticipated fourth and final book in the bestselling crossover teen vampire series Twilight, wraps up some very important questions in the gripping and wildly romantic story of Bella Swan. Split into three sections, one of which is narrated by werewolf Jacob Black, the story opens with Bella driving along, thinking about her impending wedding to Edward. Although it seems that she's about to get exactly what she wants, Bella has no idea what lays in store for her: a near-death transformation, an all-out vampire war, and many painfully divided loyalties. Though there has been some debate how well the final volume of the quartet stands up to the others, it's undoubtedly a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat read. Shades of the Darla story line in the popular television series ANGEL are definitely in play here, as well as hints of dark gothic romances and even modern young adult fiction by the likes of Garth Nix, Holly Black, and Scott Westerfeld.

Eclipse Audio Book by Stephenie Meyer

The third book in the intensely romantic vampire series by Stephenie Meyers finds Bella and Edward in a bind that threatens to destroy their tender love. Will the pair be able to make it?Betrayal, vengeance, and an intense romance combine to create a powerful narrative in Stephenie Meyer's third book in the Twilight series. Bella Swan finds herself caught between two powerful forces, her beloved vampire, Edward Cullen, and her best friend, Jacob Black, a Quileute Indian and werewolf. While Bella struggles with ancient rivalries, a particularly bloody killing spree in Seattle suggests that she might have more to fear than Edward and Jacob battling for her love. Gripping, fiercely heated, with almost gothic proclivities, this young-adult novel takes delicate Bella Swan farther than she's ever gone before.

New Moon Audio Book by Stephenie Meyer

The star-crossed lovers Bella Swan and Edward Cullen still find themselves as deeply in love as they were in the bestselling romance TWILIGHT, but dating a vampire still isn't easy. Now 18, Bella longs to be transformed into a vampire by Edward, but he continues to refuse. After a disastrous birthday celebration where Bella's blood proves to be too tempting to the Cullen family, the unraveling of their lives is in full force. This page-turning young-adult gothic delves with gusto--and engrossing action--into the themes of passion and pain.

Twilight Audio Book by Stephenie Meyer

Seventeen-year-olds Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are enmeshed in an intense, hungry love that leaves them both destroyed, yet passionately longing for more. Bella's scent and very being excites Edward, a vampire who, along with his family, abstains from feasting on humans. After a difficult start, the two become inseparable, learning more and more about each other as the days pass, all the while knowing that with every thrilling moment might end with Bella's death. The beautiful, evergreen landscape of Washington state's Olympic Peninsula permeates this gripping, fast-paced drama as it torpedoes through the notions of family, relationships, and sacrificing everything imaginable for true love. Named one of Publishers Weekly's Best Children's Books of 2005 and a 2005 School Library Journal Best Book.

The Lord of The Rings - The Return of The King Audio Book by J.R.R. Tolkien

What is considered to be the most important fantasy epic of the 20th century roars to a close in this third and final volume of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The armies of the West mass for their final assault upon the forces of Sauron, but they have little hope of prevailing against the Dark Lord. All depends on whether the Ring-bearer Frodo will complete his quest, and destroy Sauron's Ring of Power in the fires of Mount Doom. But Frodo is imprisoned in the dungeons of Mordor. Are the quest--and Middle-earth--doomed? There are very few fantasy writers who can claim to be as detailed a world-builder as Tolkien was, and that comes to the fore in this book, as it contains over one hundred pages of appendices concerning the history, cultures, and languages of the peoples of Middle-earth, including the ultimate destinies of most of the main characters in the story. What is considered to be the most important fantasy epic of the 20th century roars to a close in this third and final volume of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The Lord of The Rings - The Two Towers Audio Book by J.R.R. Tolkien

The action really picks up in this middle volume of the internationally renowned classic epic THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The Fellowship, the band of nine companions whose task it was to bring down the Dark Lord Sauron by destroying his Ring of Power, has been sundered. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas race to rescue the hobbits Merry and Pippin, kidnapped by orcs, and receive help from an unexpected quarter. Meanwhile, Frodo and his servant Sam continue on toward Mordor, accompanied by their unreliable guide, Gollum, who himself once bore the Ring that Frodo now carries. Will Gollum lead them safely to Mordor, or will he betray them for the chance to take Sauron's Ring back for himself? And will Frodo be able to bear up under the increasing burden of the Ring--or will he succumb to its evil?

The Lord of The Rings - The Fellowship Audio Book by J.R.R. Tolkien

THE LORD OF THE RINGS is regarded by many to be the most important and influential work of fantasy of the 20th century. It generated the fantasy novel industry practically single-handedly, inspiring a multitude of novels concerning elves and dwarves on quests to conquer ultimate evil despite overwhelming odds. Although Tolkien had always intended for THE LORD OF THE RINGS to be published as a single volume, its division into a trilogy created the iconic format for epic fantasy literature. In the first book of the series, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, the Dark Lord Sauron, an utterly evil and powerful being, is stirring again after a long period of dormancy. He will soon dominate all of Middle-earth if he is not stopped. The key to Sauron's defeat is Frodo, nephew and heir to Bilbo Baggins--the hero of THE HOBBIT. The magic ring that Bilbo picked up on his adventures is in fact the One Ring, into which Sauron deposited much of his power. If the Ring is destroyed in the volcano at the heart of Sauron's realm of Mordor, Sauron too will be destroyed. Unfortunately, the longer someone bears the Ring, the stronger grows its ability to corrupt the bearer and those around him. As Frodo and his companions begin the long journey to Mordor, will they be able to keep their Fellowship intact and their purpose pure...or will the Ring's evil nature triumph over them all?

The Hobbit Audio Book by J.R.R. Tolkien

Bilbo Baggins leaves the Shire on a great adventure with a troop of stalwart companions and, along the way, meets a dragon. This is one of the classic books of fantasy literature. This 1937 fantasy is the prequel, or "prelude" to the classic epic trilogy THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bilbo Baggins is the hobbit of the title: a short, round, and hairy-footed creature fond of small comforts and his rural home. What he doesn't like (or at least thinks he doesn't like) is adventure, but that's just what he gets when a wizard and several dwarves show up on his doorstep, eat him out of house and home, and induce him to join them on a perilous quest to steal a dragon's treasure. Along the way, he picks up a golden ring with the power to turn the wearer invisible; this ring will turn out to be central to the later volumes. While THE LORD OF THE RINGS is a serious epic about the nature of good and evil, written in highly formal language and intended for adults, this earlier work is considerably lighter in tone and clearly directed toward a younger audience, having sprung out of the stories that Tolkien used to tell his own children. However, that does not and has not prevented adults the world over from enjoying THE HOBBIT.

Brisingr Audio Book by Christopher Paolini

War, love, and a strenuous battle of good versus evil are in store for Christopher Paolini fans in his third title of the Inheritance series. The boy dragon rider, Eragon, and his constant companion, the dragon Saphira, are torn by many loyalties, with the weight of the world on their shoulders. They must find a way to save Roran's beloved from the evil Ra'zac, and also help the Varden, the elves, and the dwarves in the gristly battle against King Galbatorix. Seemingly overwhelmed by their gargantuan tasks, Eragon and Saphira are forced to find a way to save the world, or all is lost. Both lauded and criticized as derivative of classic works by J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. LeGuin, and J.K. Rowling, Paolini's work is nevertheless phenomenally successful. BRISINGR sold over half a million copies on its first day out, and will be followed by a fourth, hotly awaited book. The first books in the series are ERAGON, written when Paolini was just 15, and ELDEST.

The Hunger Games Audio Book by Suzanne Collins

THE HUNGER GAME --heralded by critics as reminiscent of reality television's SURVIVOR, Shirley Jackson's disturbing short story "The Lottery," and other apocalyptic fare--takes place in Panem, where North America once existed. Amidst the desperation of the poor and the tyranny of the wealthy, a terrifying annual event called the Hunger Games pits 24 poverty-stricken kids against one another until only one triumphs. When Katniss's sister is chosen, she takes her place and must fight for not only her life but the welfare of everyone in her district. With humor and clever plotting, Suzanne Collins has created a thrilling and gripping series. A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2008 and a New York Times Notable Children's Book of 2008.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audio Book by J.K. Rowling

Ten years after Potter-mania first swept the globe, the epic series draws to a close with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, the hotly anticipated seventh and final book of the internationally revered Harry Potter series. Prophecies will be fulfilled. Beloved characters will die. Questions will be answered. (Is Dumbledore really gone forever? Who is R.A.B.? Is Severus Snape truly a villain?) In this final volume, Harry's seemingly impossible quest is to discover the locations of the remaining horcruxes--items sacred to Lord Voldemort containing shreds of his soul, making him immortal--and destroy them, saving the world from becoming a Death Eaters' paradise where Muggles are prey and purebloods rule. Accompanied by Ron and Hermione, Harry embarks on a dangerous, confusing, and often frustrating journey to discover the horcruxes. The trio is repeatedly in dire straits, making their mission seem, at times, doomed.||Throughout the series, author J. K. Rowling has been steadily escalating events towards the climactic battle between Harry and the Dark Lord, and numerous seemingly trivial details from the previous novels play important roles--proof of Rowling's masterly control of the sprawling and multi-layered "wizarding world" she has invented. By far the darkest of the novels, this impressive finale shows Harry bereft of his godfather, Sirius Black, the wise and secretive Dumbledore, and even his friends: he is forced to truly grow up and face a fight where he is the sole lynchpin in the battle between righteousness and a nearly omnipotent evil. With modern problems re-imagined in a magical setting, echoes of Christianity, and an unwavering faith in goodness, Rowling's epic saga will remain a children's classic for generations to come. A 2007 New York Times Notable Book and a nominee for the 2008 Nebula Prize.
